Blaksmif BallinOuttaControl

Experience the energy and raw emotion of Bay Area rap music through our recent collaboration on a music video with Blaksmif, a rapper hailing from The Bronx. Blaksmif and his crew journeyed to the West Coast seeking the unique vibe and flavor of Oakland and Richmond, CA. We also captured some exciting scenes in Fresno to add to the mix.

One of the highlights from this project was filming some incredibly dynamic slo-mo shots of cars spinning donuts. They took expert skill and nerve to capture, as we fastened our camera onto a tripod in the bed of a pickup truck and attempted to follow the action. Picture us speeding around corners, narrowly avoiding collision each time these high-performance vehicles gripped the asphalt and launched out of their spins. Add to that the smoky haze engulfing the scene at times – it was as much an adrenaline rush as it was a challenging shoot!

However, amidst the thrill came certain risk factors. Our pursuit of the perfect shot had us pushing boundaries, heightening both the fun and the danger elements of our efforts. Most of the b-roll was shot at 96fps using our top-notch Epic Camera, while we turned to the Canon 5DmkII for the impressive closeup shots. It was certainly a memorable experience that encapsulates the spirit of Bay Area rap.

The Bay Area’s hip hop culture is deeply rooted in the local street culture, which is characterized by a high energy vibe, the street slang used, and even the fashion that’s uniquely ‘Bay.’ It’s this raw energy that’s been captured beautifully in our footage. But, let’s also talk about the rappers who add a distinct voice to this culture and have consequently influenced the American music stage.

Notable Bay Area Rappers

A few names instantly come to mind when we talk about influential rappers from the Bay Area. Their music not only showcases the unique Bay Area rap sound but also tells the socio-political narratives that shape their art.

  • E-40: Born Earl Stevens, E-40 has had a long and successful rap career since the late ’80s. E-40 is known for his unique delivery, featuring drawling and staccato punctuations, and his ability to create slang that’s been adopted by the hip-hop community.
  • Too $hort: Also known as Todd Shaw, Too $hort is another prominent name in the Bay Area rap scene, best known for his explicit lyrics and themes of female empowerment.
  • Mac Dre: Andre Hicks, or Mac Dre, is one of the pioneers of the ‘hyphy’ movement, a high-energy and free-spirited Bay Area music style. His music continues to be celebrated for its originality and unapologetic approach to taboo subjects.

While these icons set the stage, there has been a newer generation of artists like G-Eazy and Kehlani who continue to push the boundaries of the Bay Area sound.

The Influence of Bay Area Rap

The impact of Bay Area rap extends beyond the local music scene. Through the years, the unique narrative, delivery style, and raw energy of Bay Area rap have brought visibility to the region’s socio-political issues, creating a global conversation through their catchy beats. Artists like Tupac Shakur, who spent critical years of his music career in the Bay Area, initiated conversations about racism, police brutality, and socio-economic inequalities through their powerful lyrics.

To embody the spirit and echo the authenticity of the Bay Area in your rap music video, there are a few key elements to consider. Let’s dive in.

First and foremost, choose a suitable location that speaks to the essence of the Bay Area. This could be the bustling streets of San Francisco, the culturally rich neighborhoods of Oakland, or any other place in the region that holds symbolic relevance to your music. Just ensure your location reflects the realistic texture and scenery of the Bay Area.

Next, script your video in a way that mirrors the lifestyle, experiences, or socio-political issues prevalent in the Bay Area, connecting your music and video content seamlessly. Remember, your story must strike a chord with your audience and reflect the raw energy of Bay Area rap.

While maintaining the realistic theme and narrative, incorporate the right creative elements. Play with lighting, angles, and transitions to create a visually-appealing, dynamic music video. However, try not to overuse effects or lose the essence of the story you’re trying to portray.

Correctly casting is another crucial step. Employ individuals who can effortlessly represent the diversity and authenticity of the Bay Area’s population. This could range from local artists to regular folks who embody the right spirit and character.

Lastly, never forget about post-production. Good editing ultimately shapes the final product. During this stage, make sure the sound, visualation, and the narrative of your video are all aligned, telling a cohesive and compelling story.

All of these elements together will produce a quality Bay Area rap music video. It’s all about capturing the region’s essence and painstakingly piecing together all the parts. This process often requires patience, practice, and potentially, even some professional assistance. But, with the right amount of passion and hard work, your video will resonate with fans and successfully carry the legacy of Bay Area rap.
